I have been thinking about this a lot lately, and decided it’s time to put it into words.

Immigrants come in all shapes and sizes, and they’re not all the “evil criminals” Trump wants us to think they are.

On my dad’s side of the family, I am the second-generation offspring of Portuguese immigrants.

I remember my grandparents as hard-working, church-going, neighborly people. My great-grandfather ran a bakery, and my grandfather would make deliveries for him when he was young. He went on to work for the county. My grandmother worked in a dental lab.

My father was the first generation to attend college, served in the army, then went on to work for the same company for decades.

My entire family instilled in me a strong work ethic, and mine is the first generation from that side of the family to earn a master’s degree.

There are evil people in any demographic you want to pluck out of the pot. But there are good people in every demographic as well. You cannot ever lump an entire concept, culture, or group of people together under one label and even begin to understand. As my son grows older, I hope I can show him that.

We are all always so much more than what we appear to be (even the so-called “evil” ones), and the minute we cease having compassion for one another, we are in serious trouble.
