Dear Son,

I turned on the news today and discovered that while I slept, more than 50 people died in another senseless act of violence. I wanted to cry.

Then you crawled into the room, babbling at the top of your lungs, oblivious to events unfolding on the other side of the country. In fact, I think you even giggled at all the bright lights on TV.

Watching you, I wished I could shield you from all the ugly in the world forever. I wished your father and I could go out on dates without fearing we might not make it home to you.

I want you to feel comfortable traveling and seeing the world like I have done. I want you to go to school and not know the constant, underlying threat of a lockdown.

There are good people in this world. We are lucky to know so many of them. I saw others on the news this morning who will be known as heroes for their quick reflexes and cool head in a crisis.

And yet, I want a better world for you. Days like today, I don’t know how I can make that possible. However, I can promise you I will never give up trying.
